Hi bookworms! Welcome to my weekly meme: Exquisite Wordiness! If you still don’t know what this is all about, here’s a brief introduction: basically, Exquisite Wordiness is a “Word of the Week” kind of post, but every month there will be a sort of theme and all the words most be related to it.
September’s theme is “I Know That Feeling“. Remember those weird emotions you feel once in a while when you suddenly realise how small you are or how your life as been sort of meaningless so far? We all experienced these sort of feelings, but we aren’t really able to describe them in sentence, let alone in a single word. Well, allow me to enlighten you.
This week’s word is Lethologica! Actually, today’s word isn’t as unknown as the previous ones because this one DOES appear in the dictionary. Alleluia! So, here’s the definition from Dictionary.com:
Lethologica n. the inability to remember a word or put your finger on the right word
Thinking about this word already makes me feel annoyed because I remember all those times when a word is right at the tip of my tongue but still I can’t remember it. That happens so often to me – about once a week, really, which might not seem like much but taking into account how angry it makes me, once a week is more than I can handle.
The most annoying of it all is that I’m bilingual in English and Portuguese (you can read more about the perks of being a bilingual reader in here) so sometimes I remember how a word is said in English but I can’t recall its equivalent in Portuguese. Guess what’s weirder in all this. Yup, my 1st language is Portuguese so sometimes I’m just like – why can’t I speak my own language?! Eventually I might remember the word – it might take 1-2 min – or my mum will tell me, but there are occasions when such does not happen. That is when I surrender to Google Translate :p
What about you? Is lethologica a recurring phenomenon in your life? Do you get as annoyed as I do? Leave your answer don’t below ⬇︎ ⬇︎
Remember to come back next Monday for the October Theme: “I’m afraid that…”Yup, it is all about phobias which is kind of connected with Halloween, don’t you think? Can’t wait!!!
Watch your step, or you may fall down the reading hole!
